Itching Clitoris: Possible Causes And Treatment Of Vaginal Itching

An itchy clitoris is not uncommon and may be natural depending on the occurrence, duration, and secondary symptoms as it relates to the present health condition of the female. When an itch occurs, then a good number of circumstances become suspect.

What causes an itching clitoris or vaginal itching? Knowing the right reason can be helpful in handling it. Firstly, the clitoris is a small sensitive part of the female sexual organ, which sits just above the entrance of the vagina. Its high sensitivity can be attributed to the presence of many nerve endings. So, when there is cltoris itching, here are the most likely reasons.

Clitoris Itching Causes Irritation

The sensitivity of the clitoris can make it highly irritable to certain things in contact with it. It can happen because of the fabric with which the underwear is made or even a new soap or detergent with which the underwear was laundered. Under such circumstances, it is advisable to change the new soap or detergent to a different one.

Itching in Clitoris During Sexual Arousal

An itching clitoris has the likelihood to occur at the point of sexual arousal. This is because as blood flows to it, the clitoris becomes a little swollen and prone to slight irritation. This is why a person may experience a temporary itch right before, during, and after being sexually aroused. This isn’t a problem as it is only temporary and goes away by itself. But a persistent itch at this period may be a pointer to an underlying infection. We suggest using products which touch your clitoris to be the best of quality like products by AdultLux

Due to Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

This vaginal infection occurs when the levels of bacteria in the vagina become altered or unbalanced. Risk factors for bacterial vaginosis include:

 • Having sexual intercourse (especially with a new partner)
 • Having multiple sexual partners
 • Douching of the vagina
 • Using products from unqualified a sex toy factory

These are some major reasons for itching in the clitoris. Bacterial vaginosis causes itching not only on the clitoris but other areas around the vagina and comes with several other symptoms so it’s very easy to determine. Other symptoms are burning sensation during urination, constant burning sensation or pain in the vagina, greyish white discharge, a foul odor (especially after sex). If one has one or more of these, it is advisable to see the doctor immediately.

Candida (Thrush)

This is a vaginal yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast (candida), which causes the clit and other vaginal parts to itch. It also comes along with other symptoms like thick white discharge in the semblance of cottage cheese, painful urination, a burning sensation, painful intercourse, redness, and swelling.

Let's have a look at some of the risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of candida infection. Diabetes or high blood sugar, pregnancy, douching or chemical vaginal washes, intake of certain antibiotics, certain birth control pills, weak immune system are some of them.

Any person experiencing all or some of these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately for treatment. It will help them to overcome the reasons for itching in the vagina to a great extent.

Lichen Sclerosus

This is a type of skin disorder that affects the genitals. It can also affect some parts of the skin around the breast and the upper body. Lichen sclerosis is believed to happen due to the following reasons:

 1. Hormonal changes
 2. Genetic factors
 3. An overactive immune system
 4. Damaged skin caused by an injury

This often occurs more in females than in males especially after the onset of menopause and is non-contagious. The following might occur in the affected areas – blisters, bleeding, scarring, white spots, wrinkled patches, susceptibility to skin tear, and bruise. If any of these symptoms are noticed, the affected person should have a doctor check the changes on their skin every 6 – 12months.

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD)

This situation is surprisingly more common in females than in males. It is a condition whereby a person is persistently aroused without any sexual thoughts or form of stimulation. The sensation can go on for as briefly as hours to as long as months. Women who experience this find it more unpleasant than pleasant as they do not exactly want to feel aroused and cannot freely discuss this with anyone openly, not even their doctors.

This condition is accompanied by other symptoms which include itching in the clitoris, itching in the vagina, tingling, throbbing, increased genital pressure lubrication, vaginal contraction, orgasms, pain burning sensation. Certain factors or activities that may contribute to the occurrence of this condition are anxiety and stress, urination, or being in a moving car can all trigger the symptoms.

Also, people who suffer from epilepsy, restless leg syndrome, and Tourette’s syndrome may be more likely to have episodes of PGAD.

Genital Eczema

This can affect not only parts of the vagina but also the buttocks and anus. Symptoms include clitoris itching, vaginal itching, rashes, sores, dry/crusty skin, and burning sensation. Causes of eczema in the genitals include fabric allergies, medication, or bathing soap.

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI)

Sexuallt Transmitted Infection is one of the major reasons why one could experience an itching clitoris or genital. However, it comes with other symptoms like pain and frequent urination, vaginal discharge and foul odor, redness, bleeding anus, genital warts, and mouth sores.

Vulvar cancer

When a person has cancer of the vulvar, several other things in addition to an itching clitoris can occur. These include thicker, lighter, or darker areas of the skin on the vulva or reddish or pinkish areas of skin, vaginal discharge or bleeding, pain or burning sensation, an unhealing sore, lump on the vagina. At the occurrence of any of these signs, one should see the doctor right away for a pelvic examination.

Now we know that a lot of issues that go from mild to very serious are led by an itch in the clitoris. Whatever the case may be, offering an immediate solution to the itch before or after diagnosis could be very helpful. So here are some solutions.

Treatment for Itchy Clitoris

Here are eight different ways through which you can treat an itchy clitoris.

 1. Topical creams which help relieve clitoris itching by numbing the genitals
 2. Antifungal medicine prescribed by the doctor for vaginal yeast infection
 3. Prescribed antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis
 4. Topical steroid creams for eczema
 5. Topical ointment for Lichen Sclerosus which soothes the itch and cures the condition
 6. Wearing loose cotton underwear to stay clear of irritation and itch caused by fabric
 7. Avoid using chemical soaps on the vagina to avoid irritation and wash with water only
 8. For people with PGAD, the following treatments may be recommended by a doctor: topical numbing cream, pelvic floor exercises, Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT), antidepressant, anti-seizure drugs and surgery (If the issue is from the nerves). A check-up and pelvic examination are highly recommended if the itching on the clitoris persists.
