How to get over a breakup?

When it comes to matters of heart, there is no logical explanation. Worse is when things don't work the way you want and there is an unfortunate breakup. To get over someone you love is not easy, but with the time and right approach, one can let it go in a less harmful manner. 

Accept and understand

The unexplained, unexpected breakups are the worst, and whether you are a man or a woman it is not easy to deal with a personal loss. The only way to truly get over a breakup is to feel the pain. Accepting and acknowledging that you lost someone is the first step in moving on. The second step is to understand that the relationship is not your identity, but a part of your life. Next, let go of the idea of closure because there will be things that don’t make sense.

A break up can emotionally and physically weaken you, but it is also an opportunity to learn and grow. To stay positive after a breakup, Girish Dutt Shukla, author of Maroon In A Sky of Blue, shares a few interesting tips. He says, "Make a list of things and experiences that bring you happiness, that you might have missed out on or couldn't do while being in a relationship. Start checking off this list. Discard things in your life that remind you of your past relationship. Love yourself a bit more and treat yourself with good food, clothes, spa, mental health days, etc. Spend more time with your friends and family. Catch up with your loved ones and let them feel your presence."

There is no set time period to be okay or get over a relationship, but one must take time to heal completely before starting anything new. Stop reminiscing and blaming yourself for things that happened in the past. It is also important to understand that it is absolutely alright if you still love them. Denying your feelings can cause breakdowns. Take it slow and easy and let time heal the wounds.

New ideas, new experiences

Adding a new routine post your breakup can make things easier to forget the grief of a heartbreak. Girish mentions some quick ways to find new excitement and adds, "Make newer memories by visiting new places, trying interesting cuisines, meeting new people, etc. Try a pottery class, paint, travel or even doing something adventurous like hiking or surfing is a wonderful way to feel that wave of positivity. Stay away from social media or do a digital detox to stay away from doom scrolling. Do not keep tabs on your ex. Find a new meaning or purpose to your life by joining a cause, volunteering, adopting a stray pet, etc." 

Simple changes like these will teach you that your life is so much more than a breakup.
