Organizations Fighting Against Gender Violence

Gender-based violence is a violation of human rights. People use violence as a tool to keep the existing gender differences in place.

The root of gender-based violence exists in the gender inequalities that consider one gender superior to others. According to a report, an American gets sexually assaulted every 68 seconds.

Even under these scenarios, several organizations work towards making our societies safer and inclusive. These organizations are making constant efforts to alienate gender-based violence from society.

Let's have a look at some of these organizations and the kind of work done by them.

National Organization For Women

The National Organization For Women (NOW) was founded in 1966. According to the organization, they focus on a multi-issue and multi-strategy approach to women's rights.

With a unique approach, NOW aims to reduce gender violence. It believes that there are many aspects related to gender violence against women.

They are striving to make society free from discrimination. As a result, the organization fights discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

They are also making efforts to educate people to erase the effects of homophobia. NOW wants to ensure civil rights protection for everyone, irrespective of gender.

Their 'Crisis In Family Courts' program ensures that women do not face discrimination in family courts. Another campaign by the organization is 'Love Your Body.' Through this campaign, NOW challenges the beauty standard set by the beauty industry.

The group also contributed to the 'Gender Shadow Report.' It exposes sex-based workplace discrimination in the United States.

The Audre Lorde Project

Audre is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender non-conforming center. It works towards social and economic justice.

TransJustice is a program by the organization. Through this program, they focus on the need for equal rights for trans individuals. The program emphasizes the significance of healthcare and HIV-related services for trans people. It also protects the community from police and government violence.

National LGBTQ Task Force

National LGBTQ Task Force aims for a future without any barriers. Here, they want society to be a safe place where a person is free to practice any sexuality. Task Force believes in freedom and equality for LGBTQ people.

When they started the 'Queer the Census' movement, they wanted the queer community to gain access to federal funds. They also focus on obtaining representation in government and also work on attaining rights.

The organization acknowledges the reproductive health rights of LGBTQ. They believe that the decision of whether to become a parent should be personal. One should also be allowed to decide when to have kids free from violence. It is an organization that realizes the LGBTQ+ community's need for contraception, abortion, HIV, and parenting resources.
