10 Signs of Poor Mental Health in Men

Mental illness is proven to be less prevalent in men but it is also less likely for men to seek help when they are suffering from mental health problems, this is most commonly due to the pressure society puts on men to be the image of strength and power. They are taught to show less emotion than women and sadly, all too often, that men don’t cry. So even though men are less likely to have mental health problems, they are more likely to commit suicide because of poor mental health.

Any person, no matter their gender, can experience mental health disorders; but men will often exhibit different symptoms than women. Here are 10 of the most common signs of poor mental health in men (signs are not at all limited to these 10).

  1. Anger, aggression & irritability
  2. Difficulty sleeping
  3. Engaging in high risk activities
  4. Obsessive or compulsive behaviours
  5. Noticeable or significant changes in mood and energy level
  6. Alcohol or drug abuse
  7. Overall health issues, including headaches, digestion issues
  8. Restlessness, difficulty concentrating, being on edge
  9. Sadness
  10. Suicidal thoughts

If you have a man in your life that you think may be suffering from mental health issues, seek advice from a professional on how to help him and always make sure to show support. If you are a man who thinks he may be suffering from a mental health disorder, it is ok to seek help! Reach out to family if you feel comfortable and most definitely meet with a doctor to discuss an action plan that works for you. Nobody should have to suffer, we all deserve help, love and support.
